It
is no coincidence Imogen Cunninghams beautiful photographs
of flora have become her most enduring legacy. She photographed
botanical images throughout most of her career - from 1913 through
the 70s with intelligence and originality and with special
focused intensity during the 1920s and 30s. Two
Callas is regarded the masterpiece of Imogen Cunninghams
floral series. Vintage prints are extremely rare and none have
ever appeared at auction to date.
This photograph was printed in the 1930s after Imogen Cunningham
became convinced, like others in the F-64 Group to which she belonged,
that glossy paper was superior to platinum in conveying both the
modernism and clarity of their new aesthetic.
